FAQs
Discover the profound possibilities of finding hope in a world that embraces radical inclusion. We hope our answers to these common questions welcome you to our cause.
Can churches really be both Christian and LGBTQIA friendly?
YES! In fact, many of our ordained local ministers and leaders joyfully hold identities across the queer spectrum. We’re not only “friendly”-in many cases we are also celebratory! Note that where a congregation uses the phrase “open and affirming,” it means that they have had an intentional conversation as a congregation to both learn more about the community as well as be more welcoming and inclusive.
What if I’ve been rejected by a church before?
First- we’re so sorry that happened to you. Churches are complicated institutions full of people being people, in all their messy, imperfect selves. And God knows that people have done so much harm in God’s name in the past, and still today. In the Southern New England Conference of the United Church of Christ, we don’t promise to be perfect, but we DO promise to keep trying to do better. We do promise to stay in relationship, and keep making strides forward to build a place of hope and healing— EVEN from church itself. Many churches here start their services with the saying, “No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, YOU are welcome here.” And that’s true.
What if I’ve never stepped foot inside a church?
Then, beloved of God, YOU are welcome. Once you find a church near you, try it out online! Many churches stream services online, and often include information about how to “get” there on their websites. Or, reach out to the church and ask for a visit, a tour or a conversation! You don't have to start by attending a worship service. If you do visit during worship, and have questions, don't be afraid to ask! Someone will be happy to help! And, do know that doing this Big Brave Thing is something that a community would love to celebrate, with you. “I’m new here” is one of the most beautiful phrases we could hear, and we can’t wait to say, “I’m so glad YOU came.”
What can I expect in a worship experience?
Well, that depends! Our churches are unique in their expressions of how they experience God, and each other, and worship is a reflection of that in each community. You may find congregations led by the people within them, telling stories of faith and hope; or you may be led to a congregation that has a whole musical performance as part of their worship! Our congregations govern themselves, make their own decisions, and choose to engage together, because they believe that we are better, together. Come join us?
